Philip Morris & Co., Ltd. was established in 1847 when the family of Philip Morris opened their first London tobacco shop and began making tobacco products that royalty and the working man alike would enjoy.

More than 150 years later, we’re the leading manufacturer of cigarettes in the United States (a position we’ve held since 1983). Headquartered in Richmond, VA, we now produce some of the most well-known brands in the consumer products industry. Read Our History.


A Premium Brand Portfolio that Leads the Industry

Marlboro leads our cigarette product portfolio. It’s the number one cigarette brand in all 50 states and the number one cigarette brand for men and women across all adult age groups. In 2018, Marlboro's retail share was 43.1 percent, larger than twice the share of its two largest competitive brands combined.

We also manufacture other strong cigarette brands, including ParliamentVirginia Slims and L&M. These brands are among the nation’s best-selling cigarette brands. In 2019, PM USA’s retail cigarette share was 49.7 percent.

* Retail share results for cigarettes are based on data from IRI/MSAi, a tracking service that uses a sample of stores and certain wholesale shipments to project market share and depict share trends. This service tracks sales in the food, drug, mass merchandisers, convenience, military, dollar store and club trade classes. For other trade classes selling cigarettes, retail share is based on shipments from wholesalers to retailers (STARS). This service is not designed to capture sales through other channels, including the internet, direct mail and some illicitly tax-advantaged outlets. It is IRI’s standard practice to periodically refresh its services, which could restate retail share results that were previously released in this service.
