One important measure of our business is the impact we have on the environment.
In defining our environmental footprint, Philip Morris USA has identified the major areas where we think our operations may affect the environment:
- air emissions, specifically carbon dioxide
- energy usage
- water, including consumption and nutrient discharge in wastewater
- solid waste generation
In each of these areas we are actively seeking ways to minimize our impact.

For operations under our control, we have completed site assessments for most of our facilities and established 2004 data as a baseline for our program.
We also established 2008 reduction goals for our environmental impact, per the following performance indicators:
- 10 percent for carbon dioxide (CO2) emitted
- 10 percent for energy consumed
- 15 percent for water purchased
- 15 percent for wastewater nutrients discharged
- 15 percent for solid waste disposed
We are tracking metrics for energy, air emissions and water purchased through a web-based management tool developed with an external partner to monitor our progress. We record waste disposed, waste recycled and wastewater nutrients discharged using internal information systems.
